Since we first landed in France, every step of our journey has reminded us that we were in an old country. Every thing we saw spoke of the past, of an antiquity without limit; everywhere our eyes rested on the handiwork of those who had been dead for ages, and we were in the midst of customs which they had bequeathed to their descendants.

The 7th grader for whom I bought the book enjoyed it and found it quite interesting, so don't take the poor rating as a mark against Bryant ' s work. But avoid this edition.The edition we received (blue cover with an abstract wave design) is obviously produced by one of the publishing companies which is responding to increased demand for under-appreciated and often copyright - free works. I usually obtain these works as text files from Project Gutenberg, and format and print them myself, so I'm aware of the amount of work it takes to get a plain text document made presentable and pleasant to read--not much. In this case, due to circumstances, I ordered the book instead of printing it myself, and I consider it wasted money.
The font used is tiny. (Good thing my son has 20/10 vision.) The tiny font spread over fairly good sized pages (I'm guessing about 6x8) makes for a very unpleasant reading experience.
The text is not fully justified (with even margins on both sides). You can do this in about 5 seconds with modern word processing, so I find the contempt shown both to the author's work and to the reader, disgusting.
There is no table of contents, so a given chapter is laborious.
Basically the publisher copied and pasted a text file as-is, and printed and bound it to make their money. The paper and cover are on a par with the average softcover book, at least.
Amazon, please try to ensure that *every* book edition has the "Look Inside" feature. I know in a vast online marketplace like this, quality control is difficult, but if these shoddy companies/sellers know people will be able to see what they're buying, it may be some motivation to make the small effort required to produce a readable book.

Great book!
I really enjoyed the simplicity of WCB's writing; pictures are not needed as his use of words paints the picture beautifully. A great portrait of life in many counties in the mid 19th century by this very well taveled man.
